The 2021 ReelAbilities Houston Film and Arts Festival will be, unlike in the past eight years, entirely virtual. While we will miss getting together in person, this is an opportunity for people to attend from outside the greater Houston area and to ask friends and family to “join” you for a ReelAbilities experience. All film, art and music events are free to attend.
Learn more about how to participate in the virtual Festival below.
Films should, when possible, be viewed prior to the programs when they will be discussed. To access them, visit our Eventive platform and enjoy our selection of 16 thought-provoking films at your convenience starting February 8th.
All films on the site have two versions available, one which is audio described. All ReelAbilities films are captioned.
Follow this step-by-step guide to watch movies on Eventive:
Two of the films which will be discussed at events, Rising Phoenix and Speed Cubers, should be viewed on Netflix.
If you do not subscribe to Netflix, please email [email protected] . We will provide you with a temporary pass to view those movies.
The world premiere of the documentary One Step at a Time will air at 7:30 on Saturday, February 20. This is the only film event where the entire audience will watch the film together. To learn more, please visit the event details page here.
Events, other than ReelWorkplace on February 11, are all in the evening. Events will consist of world-renowned speakers, panels of experts and intimate discussions. All events will take place on Zoom. All ReelAbilities Houston events require registration.
To register for events, visit the ReelAbilities Eventive Platform. You will receive a follow up email with login information to view the event upon registering. A reminder with login information will be sent the day of the event. Plan to login a few minutes before the event start time.
If you cannot locate your login information for an event you registered for, search in your emails for an email from [email protected] or the subject “Order Confirmation- ReelAbilities Houston Film & Arts Festival 2021.”
If you still not locate the login information, please email [email protected].
Monday night, February 22, is Movie Club Night. There are six different discussions happening at the same time about different films. You should pre-select one of the six films to watch in preparation for the discussion about the “Movie Club” event you have chosen. Feel free to invite friends and family to that same event so they can join you in discussion.
Please reach out to our sponsors and thank them for supporting this major advocacy event for our city and beyond. All sponsors of the Festival can be found on our sponsors page. If you want us to share your feedback with them, please email your thoughts to [email protected].
Sponsors often engage their employees in this festival through a variety of creative ways to share events and films with them. To learn more on how you can join leading Houston firms and businesses in this effort, visit our page on becoming a sponsor.
All film, art and music events are free to attend.
Donations are encouraged at the time of registration to help support the festival being free to the public. Donations of $100 and above are recognized on our website's sponsor page.
ReelWorkplace is $20 to register. UP Abilities is $10 to register.
All ReelAbilities films are captioned and audio-described. All live events will be live-captioned. All event detail pages contain additional information about accessibility. For additional information or requests, please reach out [email protected] or (713) 986-7808.
ReelAbilities endeavors to provide access to the arts for people of all abilities. If there is an area in which the Festival can make corrections or improve to achieve this goal, please contact Festival Coordinator Andie Palagi at [email protected] or (713) 986-7808.
We encourage groups to register for film discussions and events. Often, professors or teachers will assign a film and discussion for a class assignment, or a group from a collaborating organization will decide to join an event, in this case, as a “virtual group”.
If you have 20 or more in your group joining us, please let us know so we can recognize your group’s presence at the event. Let us know at least two days prior to the event at [email protected].
After an event, a survey will automatically show in the browser; a link to the survey will also be sent in an email thanking you for attending. The online survey, in which you can remain anonymous, will ask for your feedback about the speakers, film and program and its impact on you. These surveys really make a difference in our planning of future events. We will also ask for some demographic information so that we can learn about our audience and look for ways to expand it in the future.
We invite your comments or questions at [email protected] or (713) 986-7808.
